Items not labeled in photo: (1) Renal Hilum - indented area where ureter, renal artery, and renal vein enter the kidney. (2) Renal Capsule - outermost layer of model (burgundy color). (3) Renal Sinus - empty space inside the kidney that is occupied by the renal pelvis, renal calyces, blood vessels, nerves, and fat (adipose tissue). (4) dot-filled circle thing below the Renal Pelvis - it is simply another view of a Major Calyx (cross-sectioned cup).

  1. Is the renal pelvis contained in the renal medulla?

    1. No. The renal pelvis is not contained in the renal medulla. The renal pelvis is a "separate" structure from the renal medulla in terms of nomenclature/how we name the anatomical regions, but remember that all the "tubes" in the kidney are connected in some way. That is, the renal medulla's pyramids empty urine into minor/major calyces, which empty into the renal pelvis, which empties into the ureter, then the bladder, and finally, the urethra.
